HomePayback is a free cost-guide website for US homeowners. We publish plain-English guides that show what major home projects actually cost in your state — heat pumps, solar panels, insulation, roofing, windows, air conditioning and water heaters — together with the energy savings, rebates and payback time for each project.
How Our Numbers Are Researched
Every guide is built from public data: typical contractor and equipment price ranges, US Energy Information Administration (EIA) energy data, and state and utility rebate programs tracked through DSIRE. We update guides as prices and programs change. Our figures are planning estimates, not quotes — your actual price will vary with your home, your region and the contractor you choose, so always get two or three local quotes before deciding.
Why “Payback”?
A project is only a good deal if the savings eventually beat the cost. That is why every guide includes a payback estimate and a calculator: what you pay, what you save each year, and how long until the project pays for itself.
