A modern high-SEER2 central AC can cut cooling energy use sharply versus a 10-15 year old unit while cooling more evenly.
Every price on this page is for 3-ton central air conditioner replacement, installed (existing ductwork reused), compiled from public cost data across all 51 markets we track and refreshed for 2026.

| Typical yearly energy savings | $317 a year (state range $180–$485) |
| Simple payback at the typical cost | about 23.6 years |
| Expected lifespan | 15 years |
Where the Money Goes
| Cost part | Share | At the typical cost |
|---|---|---|

| Labor & installation | 38% | $2,847 |
| Permits & other | 7% | $524 |
What Affects the Price
- Capacity in tons: cost climbs with size, though less than proportionally — fixed labor and setup are shared.
- Efficiency tier: stepping from a base SEER2 rating to a high-efficiency variable-speed system adds equipment cost but cuts summer bills.
- Ductwork: this guide assumes existing ducts are reused; modifying or replacing ductwork adds roughly $2,100-$7,500.
- Matched components: replacing the outdoor unit and indoor coil together keeps the efficiency rating real and the warranty clean.
- Refrigerant transition: newer R-454B equipment and installer availability have nudged prices — another reason quotes vary in 2026.
When Central AC Replacement Makes Sense
Replacing a central AC makes sense when the unit is 12-15+ years old, needs a repair costing more than about a third of replacement, or still runs on phased-out R-22 refrigerant. It also makes sense when summer bills climb every year despite normal use — efficiency losses compound as compressors age. If your furnace is the same age, price a matched system or a heat pump at the same time; sharing one installation visit is cheaper than two.
When It Pays to Wait
Wait if the system is under 10 years old and cools well — a professional tune-up, clean coils and a sealed duct system can recover much of the lost efficiency for a few hundred dollars. Emergency mid-summer replacements also carry the worst pricing and the fewest choices; if the unit is limping but alive in spring, replacing it in the off-season (fall or early spring) often earns better quotes.
